I don't think it's possible to make a transparent solar panel though.
What they did was just a concentrator, to (refract, reflect) [not sure] the light from its surface to the edges. Which is very handy actually, it opens up a lot of opportunities for practical applications.

I wasn't particularly accurate with my summary admittedly, it had been a while since I read the article. However, if they manage to get them up to even 5% efficiency, a clear concentrator would easily out compete traditional solar panels.

Well, they did make a trade-off to have that transparency. They had to give up a good range in the light spectrum. So... I have no idea how they can possibly get over that. They probably will, we'll just have to wait. Smile

Just imagine solar-paneled windows on skyscrapers Very Happy

I literally cannot wait for that. I'm so sick of people shooting science down because it's inconvenient for them to help make a difference. Mad

Wait, what? In which cases do these 'shooting down' happen?

On other news, I'm also really excited for Optical Transistors and Graphene. Very Happy

One prime example I can think of is investing in solar energy instead of coal-but because coal is more convenient we keep polluting the atmosphere instead of trying to reverse the destruction we've caused by generating renewable energy.

That's how it is :-/ but some people don't even know very much so they aren't interested in looking for alternatives
That's why it's up to science peeps to spread knowledge on the topic Very Happy

Money talks.

Anyway, have you guys seen the kickstarter for the solar panel roadways? comments?

Did not know about it until you mentioned it Nev, but from a quick google search it sounds pretty awesome
Will do more reading on it Smile

Exactly. It sounds so idealistic. And it doesn't seem practical to risk having delicate panels on roadways.
